What to Wear Offroading — Safety & Comfort Guide

A helmet's already covered. Here's everything else worth thinking about before you head out.

"What should I wear?" is one of the last-minute questions we get from first-time riders right before they head out. The good news: you don't need special gear beyond what you'd wear for any outdoor activity in South Texas. Here's what actually matters.

What's already provided

A DOT-approved helmet comes with every rental at no extra charge — that's the one true safety requirement, and it's covered. You don't need to bring or buy anything for that part.

Footwear

Closed-toe shoes are required. Sneakers or work boots both work fine — the point is protecting your feet from the vehicle, the terrain, and any brush along the trail. Sandals, flip-flops, or any open-toe shoe aren't safe to ride in and we won't put you on a vehicle wearing them.

Clothing

Wear clothes you don't mind getting dusty. Long pants are the better call over shorts, both for sun protection and for keeping brush and dust off your legs on the trail. A light long-sleeve shirt works well too if you burn easily — this is real Texas trail riding, not a paved track, so expect real dirt.

Eye protection

Sunglasses help with glare and dust, especially on an ATV where you're more exposed to the wind than in a UTV's cab. If you wear prescription glasses, they work fine under a helmet — just bring a strap or clip if you're worried about them coming loose on rougher terrain.

Sun protection

Sunscreen is worth applying before you start, not after you notice you're burning. A hat or cap that fits comfortably under a helmet is a good call too — rides typically run 1-2 hours outdoors, and South Texas sun doesn't let up just because it's cloudy.

What not to bring

  • Loose jewelry or anything that could catch on the vehicle
  • Open-toe shoes of any kind
  • Anything you'd be upset to get dirty — this is a real trail, not a showroom
